US Election 2016: The History, Stats, Policies and Debates

The two candidates both have tax plans which they hope to put in effect should they become President. Trump’s tax plan would disproportionately help the wealthiest Americans, saving them millions of dollars and adding trillions to the national debt. This was brought to light through the Tax Foundation. Clinton’s tax plan does not change tax rates for the middle class, but does increase taxes by 4% on people who have an adjusted income of more than $5 million, as well as closing corporate loopholes.

Both candidates came into the race with the potential to make history: Hilary Clinton as the first female President and Donald Trump as the first to become President without previously holding a political office. They are also high profile figures who have had questionable lapses in judgement that have threatened their candidacy.

Hilary Clinton was accused of poor handling of confidential emails during her stint as Secretary of State, and suffered recent health problems. Donald Trump on the other hand has most likely not paid income tax for 18 years, and the more recent tapes of him speaking of women in a demeaning manner has caused some top Republicans to call for him to step down and hand over his ticket to his running mate Mike Pence.

The second presidential debate took place on Sunday Oct 9 in Missouri, and the third and final debate will be held in Las Vegas on Monday Oct 19. The United States of America will hold the general elections this year on the 8th of November 2016, and the new President of the United States of America will be inaugurated on the 20th of January, 2017.
