Shannen Doherty’s Breast Cancer Has Spread, Her Dog The First to Detect It, Shares Inspirational Photos of Struggle

This is not surprising considering that dogs had been previously found to have 98% reliability rate when it came to sniffing out prostate cancer in men. In a research study carried out by the Department of Urology at the Humanitas Clinical and Research Centre, Milan, two German shepherds were used.

The trained dogs were given to sniff the urine of 900 men, among whom 360 had tested positive and 540 had not. One dog had a hit rate of 98.7% while the other followed closely with 97.6%.

Funnily enough, the character Doherty portrayed in Beverly Hills, 90210, Brenda Walsh, also found a lump in her breast during a self-examination (the same way in which Doherty came across it in reality). This happened in the episode ‘It’s Only a Test,’ which was first aired in 1991.

The biopsy result for Walsh came back negative, and apparently it was something which Doherty had forgotten, before a fan on Twitter brought back the memories.
