Pirates of the Caribbean 5: Dead Men Tell No Tales Will Return to Its Roots, New Characters Played By Brenton Thwaites and Kaya Scodelario Will Feature Significant Roles!

It has been nearly five years since the last film in Pirates of The Caribbean franchise, the poorly received yet financially successful Penelope Cruz starring ‘On Stranger Tides’ was released. Meanwhile, the upcoming Dead Men Tell No Tales will not be hitting screens until next year in spite of the fact that filming reportedly wrapped up in July 2015.

From the looks of it, there is a lot of CGI going on apparently. It was originally intended that the movie would hit theaters on 2017 July but recently, the release date was moved up to 26th May, 2017. This will mark six years and six days since the release of the last POC movie. Besides the return of most of the original cast, there are some newcomers as well, indicated through the whole cast:

  • Johnny Depp – Captain Jack Sparrow
  • Kaya Scodelario – Carina Smyth
  • Orlando Bloom – Will Turner
  • Brenton Thwaites – Henry (Turner?)
  • Javier Bardem – Captain Salazar
  • Geoffrey Rush – Captain Barbossa
  • David Wenham – Scarfield
  • Kevin McNally – Gibbs

The upcoming movie is directed by Norwegian filmmaking partners Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning. If you start watching the films in the Pirates of the Caribbean series one by one, you will notice how the films go from strong to weak, weaker and finally the weakest in ‘On Stranger Tides’.

The film will still continue the timeline of the previous films it has been described to be a reboot. This could however be the one that breathes life back into the franchise. The breath of fresh air introduced in the first film, Pirates of The Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, that was released 13 years ago, made it a major success worldwide. From the looks of it, Dead Men Tell No Tales is trying to achieve something similar over here.

Meanwhile, Kaya Scodelario, a newcomer to the franchise, decided to talk to Digital Spy regarding the upcoming movie, “[Pirates 5 does have] a lot more of the first movie, that’s what they wanted to bring it back to. [The producers] want to take it back to the beginning again. They wanted it to have this epic journey, and for it to make sense and for it to tie things up and also lead to new storylines.”

The plot involves Captain Jack Sparrow’s quest and search for the legendary Trident of Poseidon. It will allow him to control the entirety of the oceans. However, we know Sparrow and he won’t do something like that just for personal gain. Reports indicate that he will be doing it in order to protect the seas from new character, Captain Salazar, played by Javier Bardem.

Salazar survives the Devil’s Triangle and returns with a ghostly crew in order to claim vengeance upon Sparrow. He blames Sparrow for the death of his brother. The theme of the upcoming film sounds pretty close to the original and this is a good thing. The best direction to go for this franchise is to return to its roots and the fans will definitely appreciate that.

On an interesting turn of events, the Trident of Poseidon is not at all easy to acquire and might even require Jack Sparrow to bet his life. Jack will be seen protecting the benefit of pirates in the upcoming movie.

Orlando Bloom will be returning as Davy Jones in order to bring back the connection established in the earlier films of the franchise. Bloom confirmed his presence in the upcoming movie to Coming Soon and said, “I’m down the bottom of the ocean. It might be kind of fun to do something where I’m rumbling round the bottom of the ocean, because I won’t look anything like me.”
