The next generation of PlayStation, that is PlayStation 5 has become the talk of the town as of late. A number of rumors and speculations regarding Sony’s upcoming gaming device have started floating around on the internet.
Various reports state that the device might be built like a set-top box. Emmet Shear, the executive at Twitch recently shared his views on modern gaming and the upcoming PlayStation 5 as well as the Xbox Two.
Apparently, in recent times, smartphones are being used as gaming consoles. The Virtual Reality technology is also gaining popularity. Thus it could be stated that the upcoming consoles are facing some kind of a threat.
If the developers restrict the functionality of the devices as mere gaming consoles, it may fail to find takers. However, if the devices come with a multifunctional feature, people might find it more suited towards their needs.
Emmet Shear pointed out that normally a console lasts in the market for a period of about of 5 years. However, it can be seen that technology is changing at a first pace and thus the life cycle of the next generation of consoles might not last a full five years if they are built as just gaming devices.
Instead, if the device comes with other functions, people will find more uses for the device and thus, its life cycle will not be affected by the changing technology. Geoffrey Zatkin, the Chief Product Officer at EEDGAR had previously stated that the current gen consoles of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One along with the Wii U will be the last of their kind.
Apparently, he was hinting towards the fact that the next gen consoles will be quite different from the existing ones in the market.
The Electronic Entertainment Expo is schedule to be held from June 14 to June 16. Fans have started speculating if Sony would come forward with some kind of an update regarding the PlayStation 5 at the event.
That being said, it is likely that Sony will unveil a brand new PlayStation console at the event. However, it will most certainly not be the PlayStation 5. If indeed Sony reveals a brand new PlayStation at the event, it will be the PlayStation 4.5 NEO.
As far as this device is concerned, it will reportedly come with the ability to run games in 4K resolution. It will also be packed with the support for Virtual Reality. Apparently, it will be more advanced than the PlayStation 4. Better hardware will be fitted under its hood which includes a more powerful GPU compared to the one found in the PlayStation 4.
The powerful GPU will enable the device to effortlessly run games which have quite high-end graphics. Not only that, the clock speed of the device will be higher compared to that of the PlayStation 4.
The PlayStation 4 runs on a 1.6GHz processor, however, the upcoming NEO will pack eight Jaguar CPU cores that will run at a speed of 2.1GHz. a higher bandwidth on the memory will also be integrated into the device.
The AMD GCN that will be used for the NEO will have 36 CUs running at a rate of 911MHz. A GDDR5 memory will be used in it which will make the device even more snappy and powerful.
Since the NEO is set to be released, it is quite unlikely that Sony will roll out the PlayStation 5 within the ongoing year. Details regarding the technical aspects of the device are scarce at the moment. An AMD chipset will most likely be used for building the device.
