The Guardians are back and reports indicate that production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is already underway in Atlanta. Similar to all the other Marvel movies, there is a shroud of mystery surrounding this sequel. The movie became a surprise box office success and it is also the fourth highest grossing movie made by Marvel Studios yet.
There was a lot of attention given to what Drax, Rocket, Gamora and Star Lord would be up to next. However, a dynamic team photo was released and it looks like the Guardians are as rock and roll as ever. We will get more information in just over a year when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 launches in theaters on 5th May 2015.
However, thanks to the countless interviews by writer/director James Gunn, we already know a lot about it already. There is a lot that has been provided by Marvel Studios Kevin Feige and the film’s cast over a year and a half. Let’s take a look at what we know so far. The production for Vol. 2 has already begun in Pinewood Studios in Atlanta.
In case you don’t know, James Gunn was chosen and confirmed as the director of the initially released Guardians of the Galaxy back in July 2014. This was actually announced even before the first Guardians movie opened and this clearly displayed how confident Marvel Studios was about this franchise.
On November 2014, he started talking about it and declared, “I had the basic story for number two while I was working on number one, and perhaps even beyond that.” He had 70 pages of the script written by April 2015 and completed the first draft in May 2015, the second draft in September 2015, and the final draft in January 2016.
Reports indicate that Pratt actually started to cry after hearing James Gunn’s pitch about the movie. Chris Pratt stated, “I will say that [James Gunn’s] pitch and his idea legitimately put tears in my eyes.” “It is so good… I cannot wait to get started on it, and I cannot wait for people to see what he’s going to pull off with this second movie.
It’s so, so big and so good.” Meanwhile, Vin Diesel also decided to talk about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and said, “James Gunn is such a great writer, I read this script and I go, you’re such a great director and you’re this great a writer too. No wonder Marvel is so excited about what you do. No wonder Marvel can’t wait to see ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2.’ It’s one of those page-turners; you can’t put the script down.”
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige accidentally declared the name of the upcoming movie as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in June 2015 and the title was officially confirmed by James Gunn, a few hours later. The current release date for Guardians Vol. 2 is 5th May, 2017 and this was announced in October 2014, as part of the Phase 3 announcement for Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In other news, James Gunn earlier declared that the cast will undergo several emotional changes. James Gunn declared, “[B]asically, James Bond is a James Bond movie over and over and over again.”
“The character never learns anything, and the character never does anything new. And that’s not a knock. It’s a really fun series. But that’s not what the Guardians are. The Guardians are going to continuously change.
I think that some of the characters are probably worse than what we think they are, and other characters are better than what we think they are. It’s going to be interesting to learn a little bit about that as time goes on.”
