  1. You first couple paragraphs about Josh Mosquiera are simply not fully true…
David Brevik was responsible for Diablo 1, Diablo 2 and Lord of Destruction, and the initial success of the franchise leading to Diablo 3.. Jay Wilson was responsible for Diablo 3, Josh was only Reaper of Souls.

I don’t know how you drew the conclusion Diablo 4 won’t go because Josh left, when he was director for only 1 out of 4 games. It is very common in the video game industry to have many different teams inherit things. There will likely be a Diablo 4 given all of the recent job postings at Blizzard..

Why D4 instead of an expansion?
Because it is a whole new team, and the vast majority of the D3 team are gone, or on different projects.

  3. I am not a fan of a huge amount of “journalists” that know absolutely nothing about what they write. It seems you have not done any research and instead simply read one or two biased articles in order to write your own.

Diablo 3 was a big success in terms of numbers and sales, but that is only because of the huge success of Diablo 2 and how it was designed. The majority of fans that bought Diablo 3 were disapointed and have stopped playing it. With reaper of souls, a huge new gamer base emerged, most of which have never played Diablo 1 or Diablo 2, and they have done tremendous damage to the franchise by demanding things from Diablo 3 Reaper of souls that were totally against the true nature of the genre.

Jay Wilson has done some good and some very bad decisions with the original Diablo 3. That, and some other scandals have led to his departure from the Diablo 3 team. Josh Mosquiera which “replaced Jay” wasn’t really a game director, he was only a public facade to make the playerbase think that there is new wind in the franchise. It was a first-time opportunity for Josh to gain “Director” experience (on paper only), because Blizzard likes to develop it’s internal work force and broaden the expertise of individuals. Josh is in no way “solely” responsible for the success of Reaper of Souls. Reaper of souls sold so many copies because the original Diablo 3 was so bad, and the players have already spend money on the original so they had hope that Reaper of Souls would change the game for the better (which it did, but only to limited extend) and because our society interprets “more of something” with “better”.

Diablo 4 needs in fact a new Game Director because both Jay Wilson and Josh Mosquiera directed games that alienated the actual fan-base of the Diablo franchise but on the other hand won a new gamer base which is an entirely different generation of people (aka candy-crush, self-entitlement, “I want everything but don’t want to work for it”-mentality individuals). That being said, an entirely new Game Director and other new key-people are a MUST for Diablo 4 to be a success in terms of “Satisfied Customers” aka Gamers. The sales will roll in regardless and in any case. But the goal is to be remembered fondly and thought of enthusiastically by the gamer base, because those people are the ones that make the franchise have a future. Sales are meaningless, if you destroy a franchise with one installment or two, by appealing to the “wrong” kind of gamer aka pure-casuals.

There was in fact an expansion pack planned for Diablo 3 after Reaper of Souls, but it was canceled due to the fundamental inherent design issues that plague Diablo 3 since it was conceived. Instead, that planned expansion pack was released to the public “for free” after the many scandals and unhappy playerbase. This was a decision made at the time by the CEO in order to “Win back the playerbase” (which was only successful in a limited fashion). Diablo 3 will always be the “odd child” in the family, and Blizzard is eager to move on and return to the roots of the Diablo franchise. We will be seeing more aspects of D1 and D2 in Diablo 4, while at the same time introducing new things on top if what worked in the past.
